Our Inspector's Highlights
- It’s a trek, but it’s worth it once you get there. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this expansive property is surrounded by woods and wildlife, and it offers amazing views.
- Along with the rustic setting comes a bounty of outdoor activities. You can go hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hunting, stargazing and so much more.
- If you’d rather stay indoors, there’s also a fabulous spa to get pampered in, along with a chlorine-free pool.
- The hotel boasts an observatory dome where you can learn about the stars and galaxies. Offering two programs nightly — the Star Walk and the Tour of the Universe — you can take part in viewing stars close up and learning from the hotel’s astronomy staff.
- Kids will love hanging out on the hotel’s large patio overlooking the mountains and golf course. But they’ll love it even more when at dusk, the staff brings out all the fixings for s’mores.
Things to Know
- If you’re queasy when it comes to heights, we recommend not looking out the window on the drive up the winding road to the resort.
- It’s smart to grocery shop for your stay in a private cottage ahead of time; it’s a six-mile drive just to the property’s gates from the lodge.
- While it’s rare to see a bear (but not uncommon), you’ll definitely run into a few whitetail deer along the way. Be watchful of them while driving and hiking, and be on the lookout for other wildlife such as snakes.
The Rooms
- Rooms at this Four-Star hotel are very rustic featuring dark hardwood flooring, wood crown molding, wooden paneling on the walls, wood tables and chairs, marble and granite countertops, and stone flooring and tiled showers.
- The rooms also boast floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that open to a large wooden patio in the living room and guest room.
- Exceptional attention to detail can be found in the guest rooms — everything from the nature- and animal-inspired artwork to the dark hardwood flooring, dark wood tables and leather couches.
- Amenities include a wet bar with a mini bar, Keurig coffee maker with coffees and teas and a very spacious patio with plush patio furniture with a spectacular view of the property, including part of the golf course and the mountains.
The Restaurants
- The main restaurant, Elements, offers American cuisine in a sophisticated yet cozy atmosphere — think wood paneling and a toasty fireplace.
- The upscale restaurant, which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, focuses on regional and locally grown ingredients. Reservations are required since it’s a popular choice.
- Stables Saloon is the original dining outpost at the Four-Star hotel. It has a unique location atop the old stables, and you can head there seasonally for breakfast and dinner.
- The three-course dinner menu at Stables Saloon might include soft shell crab with a tomato-onion salad and basil aioli, maple basted Berkshire pork loin, and peach berry cobbler for dessert.
- For more causal fare, you drop into the 19th Pub, offering a good selection of beers, single malts and cocktails, along with lunch and dinner options such as a turkey bacon ranch wrap, Low Country shrimp and grits, and a slow-roasted pork sandwich.
